MONSANTO DENIED INTEREST IN MARIJUANA

Monsanto denied on Thursday “any link with development or commercialization of marijuana” in Uruguay, claiming that it is not working on a transgenic marijuana seed. Days before representatives of the opposition had criticized the possibility of using these seeds in the country.

Monsanto denied on Thursday “any link with development or commercialization of marijuana” in Uruguay, and rejected the versions that indicated that the multinational was “working on patenting a transgenic marijuana seed in Uruguay or any country in the world”.

Allegations on the possible participation of Monsanto in the creation of transgenic marijuana seeds for use in Uruguay resurged this week after President José Mujica had an interview in New York with the business man George Soros, identified as on e of the main shareholders of the company dedicated to the elaboration of agricultural products.

After the meeting, nationalist representative Verónica Alonso announced she would ask the executive power to prohibit the use of transgenic seeds, claiming that she would not allow “our country to be a lab for a financial speculator like Soros to have fun with, just as he has by pressuring other countries of the world.”

In declarations picked up by CNN, Mujica had implied that consumers wouldn’t receive seeds but rather “clones” which would allow greater control.
