Golden Words.

Diego Forlán is getting ready to go back to Spain since he has to be at the Atlético Madrid training on Monday. Before leaving he thinks back on these past few months.

In an interview in the program: Da Silveira con usted, in Sport 890,  Forlan pointed out that it had been difficult to rest these past few days since he had had “very busy vacations”:

India
Regarding his trip to India last weekend he emphasized how well he was treated by everyone and how this experience was really different from anything else he had experienced. “It’s a culture where football is not that big, they’re trying to push it in Calcutta, the most footballistic city”. The purpose of his trip was to be a part of the jury in a reality show of young players.

While in the city he found time to go to Mother Teresa’s house since it was near the hotel. “I was really surprised to see where she lived, what she did… it was shocking to see how people are living and their needs”.

Communicating with people.

The world cup in this region was characterized by the euphoria of the people living la Celeste’s matches. For Forlan “watching the videos and seeing the images you can see what was generated by the people. We knew about this form people’s comments and emails we got from our families. We were aware of what how the fans were feeling but we tried to not think about it so we could have our minds on the next game” he said.

Twitter

The only member of the Uruguayan team with an account in this social network, he ended up being a link between the group and the fans. Forlan said that it was a fun experience uploading videos for people to live the world cup a little more closely.

The Games.

Regarding the World Cup games, he confessed that after the tie against France “I was pissed off because we had lost a chance to win. We didn’t play very well, but they didn’t do too much either. We couldn’t play our football of cause any damage” he said he was also angry because of the shot he missed.

In the second game against South Africa he said that in the end being visitors was a favorable thing since “we’ve played a lot against locals and it’s nice to know they’re against you. It was a strange game, it was a smaller stadium and it was incredibly cold. My goal changed the game and then we started playing in a calmer fashion. We had opportunities that we missed but then came the penalty and Palito’s goal which made us almost get through to the second round.

Then came México and “we won it well, I think it was a very controlled game. I was tired and had a bit of a sore throat because of the changes in temperature in different cities”.

After the game against South Korea came the “nail issue. I had already had a similar problem at the end of the European league – my nails had never gone black, but I used to feel that my fingers were beating and they hurt so much I couldn’t sleep”. He had blood extracted from the affected fingers and that relieved him enough to face the game against Ghana, which he played in optimum physical conditions. “That night was fine, but the intensity of the penalties and the way in which everything happened caused really exhausted us”.
The final two.

“With Holland and Germany I was extremely tired. Mainly because the recovery time after the Ghana match was from Friday to Tuesday, and I was also tired after my season with Atlético Madrid. I ended up playing 68 matches in the year and the last 15 or 20 were very demanding, besides, some of the pitches were hard and that tires you even more” he said.

The game against Holland, he said, was a very difficult one, the defeat was very hard to take and we really didn’t want to lose the match for the third position.”
Diego’s disappointment can be transformed in thirst for revenge for the next world cup because he is planning to defend his golden ball even though he is aware of his age: “I know I’ll be older, but I’ve seen other players who are 34 or 35 in world cups and they perform well and that’s why I’m going to do my best to be there”.
