A little over the top

DEMOCRACY DAY AT THE PARLIAMENT

Ex president Luis Alberto Lacalle had a dispute with Colorado representative Fernando Amado, because the latter reminded everyone that the members of parliament had not suspended their vacations when the Air Force and Army revolted against the designation of Francese as Minister of Defence.

In the session in which Democracy Day was celebrated, Amado reminded everyone that in February 1973 when part of the Armed Forces protested against Juan María Bordaberry, the members of parliament had not stopped the recess.

“They were on vacation” said the young Colorado member, provoking the reaction of ex president Luis Alberto Lacalle.

The UNA leader answered, reminding him that he had been arrested twice during the dictatorship and stated that he was not going to allow anyone to say in the parliament that he had not stood up to the Armed forces.

“I stayed here” said Lacalle, who received support from the leader of Vamos Uruguay, Pedro Bordaberry and other Nationalist legislators who left the room.

”I wasn’t expecting Lacalle’s reaction, I was simply trying to analyze the Parliament institution, it was not my intention to offend anyone” Explained Amado who received the Support of officialist legislators Carlos Baraibar, and José Mahía.

When asked about the legislators who left the room Amado answered “Everyone has the right leave. I listen to everyone, even when I completely disagree. I’m new at this, one listens and learns” he said.

“We mustn’t forget that the “technical” Coup d’état was on February 9th 1973, when the armed forces revolted against the current president Juan María Bordaberry, who, after the Boiso Lanza pact, ended up being hostage to the Armed forces. And meanwhile, people were sunbathing in the Rambla, continuing with their summer activities while the press gave the news, that didn’t even take up all the headlines. The worst part was that our country’s legislators didn’t even finish the recess to at least get together in the parliament to discuss it. They waited until it was too late in June in that last session that is so well remembered” he had said in an exclusive interview with Montevideo Portal in January 2009.
