RETURNEES GET ORGNANIZED IN URUGUAY

A group of returnees started to get organized in order to defend the interests of Uruguayans who come back from other countries.

The great amount of Uruguayans who decided to return to the country due to the crisis in the US and Europe, motivated the creation of a group of “Uruguayan returnees” who have started to get together to improve the quality of life of those who return to Uruguay.

Trinidad Algorta, who recently came back from living in Chile, explained to Montevideo portal that the “group has just been formed” and as such is having its first meetings in the headquarters of AEUBU, in Camacuá and Reconquista.

Even though it has only existed for a short time, representatives of the group met on Tuesday with the Minister of Work, Eduardo Brenta, to outline the main concerns of the Uruguayans who return to Uruguay and have to find a job.

Algorta pointed out that it was “an open meeting” in which Brenta expressed that he was grateful that the meeting was taking place since there were so many consultations from returnees and it was impossible to answer all of them. This is why the group has committed to carrying out a report which summarizes the situation of all Uruguayans who want to return so that the Ministry of Work has all the information.

In the meeting the returnees expressed their concerns for the difficulties that arise when they are searching for jobs in Uruguay. “one of the main concerns in the flexibilization of the age limits required for the majority of jobs since a lot of the returnees are between 40 and 60 years old and find it very hard to get a job” said Algorta.

Moreover, the returnees explained that the amount of document required, especially for some public jobs, constitute a real difficulty. Algorta said that the documents that proves “the pledge to the flag” and others like work experience certificates, are solved by presenting a sworn statement in other countries and here they generate unnecessary complications.

"Brenta explained that some of these things can be flexibilized through a law, but others are in the constitution” Algorta explained, pointing out that the Minister had been keen on providing solutions to the deadlines for presenting some documents.

One of the main objectives for the group of returnees will be to raise awareness in Uruguayans who live in the country about the difficulties faced by those who want to return. Algorta recognized that many Uruguayans can feel certain rejection for the amount of people returning since they compete with them for job positions, which is why she clarified that they were “not asking for exclusive benefits for the returnees, but rather for Uruguayans in general, we want the same possibilities as all the other Uruguayans” she added.
