Natalia Oreiro’s controversial statements regarding her son’s name made the Uruguayan a trending topic between jokes and criticisms directed towards her. The singer made a press release in which she made some clarifications and apologized again.
Natalia Oreiro was the center of controversy a few days ago when she tried to explain to the newspaper Perfil why she had named her son Merlín Atahualpa, a name that generated many comments at the time.
“I think it’s stupid to talk so much about it. I mean, he has these parents, not a housewife and a greengrocer who might have called him Jose” she said, which gave place to many accusations of discrimination.
Yesterday in “algo contigo” in channel 4, Oreiro explained that she had said it in reference to her two grandfathers who were called José and one of them was a grocer and the other a greengrocer.
The topic became so popular that it became trending topic on twitter where they mixed criticism with jokes about the name.
With so much controversy Oreiro had to send out a press release clarifying that it was not her intention to hurt anyone. The statement explained that “there was no bad intention in the phrase that refers to a greengrocer or a house wife, I was talking about my family, both my grandfathers were called José and they worked in a slaughterhouse and in a greengrocers, there are also many women in my family who are house wives and it’s a job I deeply respect”.
