REMAINS OF A SPANISH OFRT IS FOUND IN SORIANO

The anthropological team José María López Mazz found remains of a Spanish fort from the XVI century.

The remains of what could have been a fort in the XVI century for the Italian explorer Sebastián Gaboto in 1527 and Juan Ortiz de Zárate in 1574.

The finding was produced last Monday in the framework of the excavations for the investigation of Diagnoses and evaluation of the potential of the Rio San Salvador archeological site.

According to the Communication Secretary of Presidency, the area in wich the remains were found is over 5km2 and is located in the coast of Río San Salvador River, 2 and a half km from the Rio Uruguay.

López Mazz explained that they found pavement, a soil that was compacted by human activity, some holes where there were presumably posts, and a series of cultural materials. Together they make up a clear testimony of human occupation of the XVI century, characterized by European and indigenous ceramics, the latter clearly identified as Guaraní.

According to the anthropologist, the presence of Guaraní ceramics confirms the historical theory that the thus collectivity had close relationship with the settler. The anthropologist added that the finding “opens new perspectives for more detailed work” destined to confirm whether these forts were effectively in this area or not”.
